Document 2093 DOCN M94A2093 TI We, women, facing HIV/AIDS; what can we do about it? DT 9412 AU Pesce L; Sosa C; Pereira M SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):382 (abstract no. PD0134). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370482 AB OBJECTIVES: The prevention of HIV/AIDS through a thorough education in health. Make young women and adults--especially poor women--become aware of their condition and sexual submission degree. Make women receive clear information on STD and HIV/AIDS. Promote the multiplier action of women participants. METHODS: Context and objective groups with a bigger vulnerability to the infection and a wider multiplier capacity--women from poor ranks--, were described and selected. Variables of work with their indicators were defined: vulnerability, submission and safer sex, and worked in workshops and talks introducing the gender perspective. RESULTS: There was a time for reflexion, discussion and learning; in which every day behaviour of women and their risky situations were revised and discussed; they themselves could check and analize their private behaviour, learn to take care of themselves and assume a safer sex to prevent STD and HIV/AIDS. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Only after taking part in these workshops and talks could they realise how risky their situation is. It is necessary to face this activity from the gender perspective. The big challenge is to make these micro experiences be heard when goberments and international institutions design and implement social and development policies.
